WhatsApp is one the most popular instant messaging apps used by more than a billion people around the world. WhatsApp is light and simple with no complex interface. Probably that’s why people love using this app.
WhatsApp has expanded its service. We are now allowed to access WhatsApp from web and desktop. This will be helpful for those using WhatsApp for business. To access WhatsApp from web you can hit https://web.whatsapp.com/ on the address of your browser and make a synchronize with your WhatsApp account on your mobile device. This method is available for all platform starting Windows, Mac and Linux.
Meanwhile, if you prefer to access WhatsApp from desktop, you can download WhatsApp official app and install it to your desktop. Unfortunately, not all platforms are supported by WhatsApp. WhatsApp doesn’t offer any official app for Linux platform. So, the only way to access WhatsApp on Linux desktop is by installing third party app.
Whatsie
Whatsie is a third party app that allows you to access WhatsApp from your Linux desktop. This is actually a cross platform app. Which mean, it’s not specialized for Linux platform. Mac and Windows users can also use the app.
For Linux platform, Whatsie offers two major package, RPM (Red Hat based distros) and DEB (Debian based distros). This article will show you how to use Whatsie on Ubuntu 16.04.
- First and foremost, download the DEB package of Whatsie here.
- Open your terminal and go to the directory where your Whatsie package is located.
- Hit the following command to install Whatsie
- sudo dpkg -i whatsie-2.1.0-linux-amd64.deb
- Once Whatsie is installed, launch the app immediately to get started.
- As you can see from the screenshot above. WhatsApp offers a QR code as a method to synchronize. Open WhatsApp on your mobile device and head to the three-dots icon on the top right corner and tab on the WhatsApp Web (I use Android in this case).
- Scan the QR Code available on the desktop app of WhastApp. Wait for a moment and you will have all of your WhatsApp conversation available on your desktop app.
